Other activities

  1. Training of two PhD students (ANII, Uru): Felipe Trajtenberg (Thesis defense May 2011) and Sofia Horjales (underway). Supervision of a postdoctoral fellow (CONICET, Arg): Natalia Morero (starting May 2012).
  2. Training of scholars from Uruguay and Argentina in our facility (>10 students 2008-2012), in the context of official agreements IP Montevideo/CONICET, Amsud/Pasteur network, and local agreements with the University (UdelaR).
  3. Organization of intramural courses and workshops on Protein Crystallization and Crystallographic methods (IP Montevideo).
  4. Participation as invited professors in several undergraduate and graduate level courses at the Universidad de la Republica (including Biological Physicochemistry, and Molecular Biology, at the School of Sciences; Structural Bioinformatics, Bioinformatics Masters degree; among others).
  5. Creation of a regional network CeBEM (Center for Structural Biology of the Mercosur), in partnership with seven important scientific centers in the region. http://www.cebem.org.ar The main objective is to support high-level training for young students (PhD and postdoctoral levels), in the areas of protein crystallography, NMR, biophysics and computational biology. Funding was obtained (CNPq, Brazil; MinCyT, Argentina; MEC-DICyT, Uruguay), and several international courses have been organized covering the different disciplines. A first CeBEM symposium on Structural Biology facilities in the region was organized during the III Meeting of the Latin American Protein Society, Oct 2010, Salta Argentina. The first training trips have been supported among CeBEM centers (2010-2012).
  6. CeBEM Course “International Workshop of Macromolecular Crystallography” (full details), held at the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, April 26 – May 7, 2010. Intensive practical course, 20 students, 15 invited professors. Funds obtained through open applications to the International Network of Pasteur Institutes (‘RIIP’), the regional program AMSUD/Pasteur and CeBEM. Complementary support from Institut Pasteur de Montevideo.
